We had some exciting news in the upper grades classroom. You may remember back that I had students write to a favorite author, well Astrid heard back from her author! She received a letter back from Pam Munoz Ryan, the author of "Paint the Wind." It gave us hope that other students may still hear back from their authors as well. Also in the upper grades we baked bannocks this month to go along with our medieval theme from the book "Door in the Wall." Bannocks were a type of oatmeal or barley pancake that was baked or fried and eaten pretty much on a daily basis. We baked ours to make it a little healthier. The students really enjoyed it; I thought it was somewhat like eating pizza dough.
This month our whole school will be raising money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We are participating in the Pennies for Patients program. The lower grades will be competing against the upper grades to see who can raise the most money through the month of February. The winning classroom will get a free lunch from the Olive Garden. You can help them by checking under the cushions in your couch for spare change hiding there and giving it to a student. It benefits a great cause.
The lower grades have been busy reading the book "Lisa and the Drainpipe." It is the story of a young girl who runs away and her sister decides it is better to have Lisa home than hiding in a drainpipe. The story deals with the issue of jealousy and how it can be resolved. It also tells the story of the power of prayer. They also enjoyed creating some snow scene pictures this month in art.
