Here is an interesting story appropriate for President’s month:
Abraham Lincoln and his loyal friend Berry were forlornly sitting on the front porch of their country store, soon to fail. They wondered out loud how much longer they could hang on. Lincoln remarked that he didn’t care if the store failed if only he could take the proceeds and buy one book: Blackstone’s Commentary on English Law. He really wanted to be a lawyer.
Suddenly, a wagon heading west, pulled up to the store and the driver shouted that he had run out of money and would they buy his wooden barrel. Lincoln surveyed the man and his wife in the wagon. She was thin and emaciated and looked pleadingly into his eyes. He reached in his pocket and pulled out the last money he had in the world-- a 50-cent piece and bought the barrel. His friend Berry chided him for the foolish decision throughout the remainder of the day.
Evening came and Lincoln came out of the store to examine his barrel. He peered down inside it and spied a crumple of papers. He reached in to toss them out only to find his hands touch something solid—a book. Lifting the book and squinting in the dusk to decipher its title, Lincoln read: Blackstone’s Commentary on English Law!
Elated, he raised the book to Heaven and exclaimed that God had smiled on him and he knew from that point that God had something great for him to do! Otherwise, how could he explain this miracle?
Consider if we commit our lives to a sacred calling, God will lead us to the Bible: Commentary on God’s law—a description of His character. Our lives can reverse from bankruptcy and failure to greatness and purpose. Instead of being a burden on the world, we will carry the world’s burden. How else can we explain this miracle?
