A special program on Maryland Public TV a few nights ago was very compelling! The presentation was an investigative report on what has since been labeled CCD or Colony Collapse Disorder. This is a phenomenon that has grabbed most farmers’ attention and particularly world-wide apiaries. It addresses the mysterious disappearance of millions of bees. Whole hives that were once strong and thriving were empty. The usual markers for diseased hives where dead bees lay in front of the hive were missing.
France, which produces one of the rarest honeys, lavender, was especially concerned. They launched an intense investigation in to the matter and concluded that a new pesticide was disorienting the bees and they were unable to find their way back to the hive.
Columbia University’s contagious disease unit, typically examining only human contagion, redirected its expertise to the study of CCD. They were shocked with what they found in the humble honey bee. They found all kinds of fungus, bacteria, virus etc. They virtually concluded that the bee was soup of disease, similar to human AIDS. The poor creatures were stressed out with the life of collecting honey contrary to nature. They had been exposed to corporate farm demands, one crop gathering, a chemical soup of farm chemicals, Genetically Modified Crops, etc.
Romans 8:20,22 “For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of him who subjected it in hope,. . .We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now;. . . “
This is a worldwide phenomenon. In China where they grow a delicate pear that brings a tremendous amount of commerce to their valley; there are no honeybees! With the potential of losing the trees and the crop, they rallied all men, women, children, uneducated, educated, poor, affluent, etc. Humans gathered the pollen and using a long rod with chicken feathers attached, climbed the trees in the spring and pollinated each blossom?! This process is taking 400 times longer than the lowly honeybee. Many of the young people are now leaving the farm to find a better life in the city. This process is unsustainable. This year there are 1.6 million college graduates in China with no prospect of jobs. The suicide rate has spiked up. Consider the lowly honeybee!
The hope of the Messiah’s Second Coming is reflected in Isaiah 7: 18, “ In that day the Lord will whistle for the fly which is at the sources of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee which is in the land of Assyria. . . and they will settle on all the thorn bushes, and on all the pastures.” Even So Come Lord Jesus!
