News & Announcements
01

Oh deer. At 7:45 AM, October 27 I was in my classroom getting ready for the day when I heard the smashing of glass. I yelled out, “What happened?” and “Are you okay?" Abbie started yelling, "A deer, a deer!" I ran to the hallway and saw that a huge buck had jumped through the office window and was standing in the foyer. He ran toward the front door and smashed into the window, but it held. I yelled for Abbie to get into the classroom and shut the door.

The buck charged into the library. I closed the doors on him and called 911. As I stood outside I could see him charging the windows, standing on his hind feet, and striking at the opening.

Parents began to arrive, but were told that school was closed for the day. Law enforcement appeared and then the Department of Natural Resources and decided it was time to free the stranded buck. Everyone took cover as they opened the door and banged on the windows to frighten him out. Instead of exiting in an orderly manner, he leaped to freedom through a library window!

I entered the library and took in broken windows, overturned bookshelves, smashed guitars, ripped and bloody chimes pad covers, cracked computer monitor and ripped baseboard cowling. Blood was smeared everywhere, and antler holes pierced the ceiling. A cleaning company and glazier arrived shortly to begin work and by afternoon the results of the ‘endearing’ morning visit were barely visible.

I thank the Lord for his blessings. No one was in the office at the time he crashed through the window. Students had not started arriving at the school yet, except for the teacher's kids. No one was injured. It was a day to remember!
